Amnesia Video Game Series
Amnesia is a series of survival horror games maintained in the convention of FPP adventure games. The source of inspiration for the series is, among others, the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The series was created by the independent Swedish studio Frictional Games, which has in its portfolio exclusively productions maintained in the climate of horror. In addition to Amnesia, the team is known for the trilogy Penumbra (2007-2008) and the dark sci-fi horror titled SOMA (2015). The elements characteristic of the described series are primarily the first-person perspective (FPP) view, the atmosphere of danger, the need to take care of the mental state of the controlled character and the lack of a combat system. Changes in the last mentioned element came with the release of the game Amnesia: The Bunker, which introduced the possibility of using a revolver and grenades. Also noteworthy are well-designed logic and environmental puzzles.
Work on Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which is the first part of the series, the studio began in parallel with work on the game Penumbra: Requiem. The item debuted in 2010 on personal computers, and appeared on other platforms over the following years. The game won several awards and was very well received by gamers, which was reflected in its sales (which amounted to about 1.4 million copies within two years of its release, recouping production costs several times over).
The second installment of the series, i.e. Amnesia: Machine for Pigs, debuted three years later on personal computers (and, like its predecessor, also appeared on other platforms over time). At the same time, the title was not the work of Frictional Games (which acted as its publisher), but of The Chinese Room team; we're talking about developers who at the time were known only for the warmly received Dear Esther, but in the following years they went down in gold in the history of the industry with the game Everybody's Gone to the Rapture. The item received a mixed reception from critics and players. Interestingly, initially Machine for Pigs was intended to act only as a mod to the original, but over time the project began to grow, making the studios decide to join forces to release it as a full-fledged sequel.
For the third part of the series Amnesia, titled Amnesia: Rebirth, players had to wait until October 2020. The title arrived on PC and PlayStation 4, and in time also appeared on other platforms. The work of the Frictional Games studio drew handfuls from the achievements of the series, and although it did not introduce significant novelties, it received a warm reception from reviewers and players. Nevertheless, the production did not sell as expected; suffice it to say that it failed to make money for itself in almost six months after its release.
Nevertheless Amnesia: Rebirth was not the swan song of the series. In 2023, its fourth installment appeared on store shelves, the Amnesia: The Bunker. Unlike its predecessor, the game in question introduced an important novelty - firearms (revolver) and grenades, which the character we controlled could use in no-go situations. In addition, in addition to serial opponents, the studio decided to introduce a main monster on the scale of Alien from the game Alien: Isolation.
Games in the series Amnesia run on the basis of Frictional Games studio's proprietary engine - HPL Engine. This technology provides three-dimensional graphics of high quality....

Set of two survival horror games, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. While originally the titles were PC exclusives, Amnesia: Collection has been released only for PlayStation 4 console. First of those games is set in a grim castle, with players controlling Daniel, an amnesiac who must find and defeat the mad owner of the building. Its add-on, Justine, puts us in a role of a woman who is part of a psychological experiment. Lastly, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs follows the story of a businessman Oswald Mandus, who contracted an exotic illness. After he wakes from a long sleep, he finds out that his mansion is abandoned, and he starts looking for his children. Both productions are first-person adventure and survival horror games, in which our characters can’t use weapons, and in face of enemies, their only hope of avoiding death is to run and hide. As we explore dark locations, we must solve many puzzles and manage the sanity of our character, which drops down as we witness more and more terrifying events.

It has been created by the dev team at The Chinese Room and supervised by Frictional Games studio (creators of the original Amnesia: The Dark Descent). The Story of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs focuses on the eponymous device; set in 1899, it puts players in the role of Oswald Mandus, a businessman who fell in a coma for a few months and lost his memories due to mysterious illness. When he wakes up, he discovers that the rest of occupants had disappeared, and a strange machine noise can be heard from below. We experience the game from an FPP view, which creates a feeling of true fear in conjunction with engrossing story and climatic audiovisuals.
