The Settlers. Video Games That Vanished in 2019
Table of Contents
- Genre: economic RTS
- Studio: Blue Byte GMBH
- Release date: 2020
- Platforms: PC
Very few of the strategy series were spoiled like The Settlers (although I think Command and Conquer takes the cake here... yes, we do remember). Something that originally launched as a difficult, but pleasant economic strategy with a great unique gameplay model has suddenly twisted into a game with pseudo-realistic visual style and simplified gameplay at the same time. Somewhere along the way, the whole franchise almost lost its glory due to the free-to-play version full of microtransactions, which changed the overall game mechanics into a typical RTS, but now the whole series gets back on the track.
The new edition of The Settlers is practically a reboot of the series that fortunately respects the original. Most probably, it will provide us with a decent story (as far as strategy standards are concerned), about the settlers who have to colonize a new territory after a disaster has destroyed their homeland.
First of all, the more fairy-tale graphics design is coming back. It is different from the original visuals of first installments loved by the players, but in some way it still refers to the colorful artistic style. What's more, Blue Byte wants to make the gameplay a bit more challenging and force players to complete various tasks before they provide stability and security for their settlement. We will have to balance the military and economic aspects. Also, we will have to take care of the morale of our settlers – everything may fall apart without the proper amount of trust and satisfaction.
SIMILAR MINOR TITLES – ALSO MISSING
In addition to the long-awaited video games, there are also a few minor titles, which are worth mentioning.
Cuphead: Delicious Last Course
One of the best-rated independent games of recent years – Cuphead, was going to receive an expansion set in 2019. A typical fully-fledged add-on that expands the game. With a new character, new levels, brand new bosses and skills. Fortunately, fans will finally get it, but they have to wait a bit longer – it should be released in 2020.
