Scale of popularity:
- 2.7 million concurrent players in March 2017;
- 250 million active players in China alone;
- estimated revenue of $2.3 billion in 2017;
- $601 million in revenue in 2022 (source).
Another production, breaking records of popularity primarily in Asia – and a real veteran, too. Fantasy Westward Journey debuted in December 2001, so it's been a full-time member of the MMORPG community for some time now. Four years after the release, this game boasted 400 million registered accounts, and was gaining popularity faster than any other title in China; in 2007, it broke a record with 1.5 million concurrent players.
You would assume that a decade later, the game would fare much worse. But it's to the contrary – the debut of the mobile version in 2015 gave the game a second youth. In 2017, Fantasy Westward Journey generated $1.5 billion in revenue, and broke the record again – 2.7 million simultaneously registered players.
The continuation of Fantasy Westward Journey, called Westward Journey Online 2, released in 2002, also did a pretty good job. Despite technical problems at launch, the production could boast a base of 83 million registered accounts in November 2006. Since there's no more recent official data, we can assume that the sequel will not become as classic as the original.
