This! Is! Sparta!(n)

It is the end of the XXVI century. Humans invented a way to travel faster than the speed of light thanks to hyperspace and, under the auspices of the United Nations Space Command, began colonizing distant parts of space. And as is the case with distant colonies, these began to demand more and more autonomy, and eventually independence, which began to generate conflicts with the United Earth Government. At the behest of the Space Command, the SPARTAN II project was created - super-soldiers with superhuman abilities to crush rebellions in the galaxy.

But in 2525, humanity was attacked by space races united under the flag of the Covenant, which declared the inhabitants of Earth as heretics and launched a genocide designed to lead to our total annihilation. The Spartans were helpless in the face of modern technology, besides there were not enough of them. After the attack on the planet Reach and the great massacre, one of the few survivors turned out to be Spartan Master Chief John-117. The backdrop to the Great War was events dating back tens of thousands of years and the religion associated with the cult of the so-called Precursors, their secret weapon - the Halo rings - and the even greater threat of a parasitic species called the Flood.

Halo? I've hear about it, is it some kind of a saint?

In most European countries, Halo is held in similar esteem to NASCAR racing and American football. One of the few American phenomenons that somehow hasn't quite caught on outside the U.S. and whose popularity isn't as well understood in the area of the world where people prefer the raw, stalker vibe. But national sympathies aside, it 's really worth appreciating the power and complexity of the Halouniverse, concealing an entire mythology dating back to the aforementioned hundred thousand years. Bungie has created much more than a simple story written on the knee, as it's a complex epic from which one can draw endlessly.

There's also no denying that the main reason for Halo 's success is the gameplay mechanics themselves - the console's brilliant controls in FPP mode, combined with vehicle combat and an addictive multiplayer mode. For Xbox owners, it was a must-have item, and a total system seller for Microsoft. But the gameplay was also matched by an engaging storyline and a charismatic Master Chief character. Halo wasn't bought just for its multiplayer mode, like Call of Duty, but to explore the next adventures of Spartan. In the US, it has the same status as Luke Skywalker or Spider-Man, and the Halo brand has become a pop-culture phenomenon.
