Daren Aronofsky's new project is a film about a man who is so overweight that we can guess from the very beginning that his days are more or less numbered. The Whale is a multifaceted portrait of a man who has to face his own ego, depression, addictions and the outside world for the last time. The main character is played by the excellent Brendan Fraser. The actor, known for example from the cult-classic The Mummy , shines with his performance - his comprehensively played character forms a bond with the viewer.

And even if the symbolism used by the director can be tiring and quite indigestible (because it's quite telling), the role of Fraser and the chemistry between the characters compensate for any shortcomings. In fact, this is one of the few examples of a movie that will probably make you cry, even if you don't like the whole plot concept (cinema magic!). If Fraser doesn't get an Oscar for The Whale next year, I don't know who really deserves that prestigious award.
