6. SimCity 3000. 11 best-selling strategy games ever

Table of Contents

  1. Developer: EA Maxis
  2. Year: 1999
  3. Estimated number of copies sold: over 5 million

City builders may not be the same type of strategy as military ones, but it is hard to deny that they require plenty of strategizing. The SimCity series is a slightly forgotten classic that has been blazing the trails of this genre since the mid-1980s. SimCity 3000 is the third main installment, which introduced a lot of changes compared to its predecessor and won the players' hearts.

The first million copies were sold within six months of premiere, and in the United States, it was the second-highest-grossing production of the year after Rollercoaster Tycoon. By January 2002, SimCity 3000 reached 3.6 million units sold. In 2007, over 5 million. Considering that the game was released digitally via GOG store in 2016, the number is probably slightly higher today.
