The Deus Ex series is doing quite well – since the original, we got both a sequel (Invisible War) and two, more modern prequels (Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, which featured a different protagonist). And although it's difficult to find much fault with the new games' when it comes to gameplay, the plot of the original still seems to be an unmatched model for a cyberpunk game scenario.
Unfortunately, Deus Ex grew old rather badly. Morrowind, released just a few years later, seemed to be leagues above Eidos Montreal's production in terms of graphics. Boxy character models and extremely crude animations do not help to build the atmosphere of New York, Hong Kong and Paris of the future. In 2000, when games with better graphics weren't that abundant on the market, it must have been a lot easier.
You have to remember that Deus Ex is not only an RPG, but also a full-blown shooter, stealth and adventure game all in one. And while it arguably still has legs as stealth game, it's almost completely outdated in any other aspect. Fortunately, a sensational story and atmoshpere save the day – JC Denton, who witnesses the bloody harvest of the Gray Death, fights terrorism and corruption, takes part in events that are instantly gripping. Especially that the game is full of powerful (and what's important – logical) plot twists, right up to the thought-provoking finale.
Anachronox is another game by Ion Storm studio, though created by another branch of it. This time, the team of Tom Hall, the co-creator of Quake, decided to take players to an even more distant future. This production focuses on situational humor and vibrant characters balancing on the verge of exaggeration.
