On this page of the guide to Back 4 Blood, you will learn how to communicate in the game and what are the available communication methods.
Communicating in Back 4 Blood it's all that important. With proper communication, however, you will be able to act much better and faster when there's a threat. The very information about where zombies appear, what can summon the Horde, or even requesting meds or ammunition is very important.
As long as you play with your friends, communication will not be difficult. The problem may arise when you start playing with players you don't know. Despite this, the game enables players to communicate via voice chat using a microphone. This is the most efficient way to convey exactly what you want to tell your allies.
However, it may happen that you do not want to communicate with others in this way, or a language barrier will simply stand in the way. Fortunately, it is also possible to communicate using the ping system. You can quickly hint your allies where to go, or show them a threat that's nearby using the ping button (in the case of PS4 & 5 it will be L1).
However, if you want to use more advanced pings, use the down arrow on PS4/5 to call the ping selection wheel. There are several predefined signals, such as regroup, affirmative, negative, etc.
So, while not essential, good communication can greatly aid your efforts and help you win the games you play.
