Character development system and recommended skills in Thief Simulator Thief Simulator Guide and Tips

Last update: 29 November 2018

Thief Simulator offers a simple character development system that allows the player to get more levels and skill points that can be spent on new skills and tools. This system is simple, but it also doesn't give you much room for character customization. It also can make your game more difficult if you put points into wrong skills. This chapter focuses on character development and our recommended skills.

How does the character development system work?

The character development system is based on experience points which allow you to level up. Each new level gives you skill points which can be put into a dozen skills. Abilities unlock new tools - certain robberies are impossible without them.

You receive XP after a successful robbery (when you leave a map). You get points for every item you stole, but the final amount of points depends on your ranking score - you get the most points when you leave the crime scene unnoticed (S rank). B rank, the lowest one, is given to you when someone has called the police during your robbery. Level up by getting enough points - of course, every new level requires more points. However, one good robbery can give you 2 levels.

When you get a new skill point, open the character sheet (open the game's menu screen) and put points into whichever skill you want to - or you can follow our advice from the next paragraph.

Note - "Available tools" chapter contains descriptions of all the tools which are unlocked with skills.

In which order should I unlock the skills?

Remember, you don't have a free hand in developing your character - you need to upgrade the skills to reach a certain level and to unlock all preceding skills before you get the one you want. Because of that, you can unlock them in the following order:

  1. Lockpicking 1 - must be unlocked. Gives access to a DIY Lockpick - buy this item immediately.
  2. Lockpicking 2 - another important skill. Gives access to a Lockpick - by this item immediately.
  3. Agility 1 - you can throw bricks to distract NPCs, and to break windows.
  4. Agility 2 - unlocks Climbing Gloves - buy them right after you unlock this skill.
  5. Lockpicking 3 - unlocks access to a Mini Electric Lockpick. Buy it if you have enough money.
  6. Backpack 1 - increases backpack capacity by 25%.
  7. Backpack 2 - increases backpack capacity by another 25%.
  8. Agility 3 - increases your speed when you are carrying big items.
  9. Lockpicking 4 - unlocks a Glass Knife and Safercacking Tools. Buy both tools as soon as you get the money.
  10. Appraisal 1 - apprise more items on the spot.
  11. Appraisal 2 - unlocks Jewelry Tools which allow you to dismantle jewelry into smaller components.
  12. Electronics 1 - unlocks Hacking Tools and a Micro Camera. Try to purchase 2-3 cameras and use them during robberies.
  13. Backpack 3 - increases backpack capacity by another 25%.
  14. Car Theft 1 - you can steal cars without raising the alarm, and to remove car parts.
  15. Appraisal 3 - unlocks Binoculars. Buy this item immediately.
  16. Electronics 2 - unlocks a Hacking PDA.
  17. Backpack 4 - increases backpack capacity by another 25%.
  18. Car Theft 2 - unlocks a Car Lock Pick Gun - equip it when you are planning on stealing a car.
  19. Agility 4 - you can climb drainpipes.
  20. Car Theft 3 - unlocks a Car Key Signal Cloner.
  21. Appraisal 4 - apprise more items on the spot.
  22. Electronics 3 - unlocks a Hacking Laptop. Try to buy this item, even though it costs a lot.
