What could have been just prerendered material on trailers and early gameplays, ended up being reality. Black Myth: Wukong delivered amazing, breakthrough graphics in video games. However, not only the visuals are outstanding in the game, but it also offers compelling and satisfying gameplay and story. This does come at a cost though. Such technical advancement can bring problems in the form of FPS drops, crashes, memory errors, controller issues on PC, CPU overheating, or audio problems. Despite all that, the reception of the title is wonderful, which Steam categorizes as “Overwhelmingly Positive”. Some people are not so enthusiastic about the title though. In the reviews there is a trend of negative ones that, right next to previously mentioned performance issues, point out, dreaded by many, Denuvo. Is there any chance that Game Science will remove it at some point?

Will Denuvo be removed from Black Myth Wukong?

It doesn’t take much to make gamers frown, however one word has a special meaning for many – Denuvo. This anti-tamper system implemented in Black Myth: Wukong, among many others, is almost universally hated by players. Are there any chances that Game Science will remove it from their production?

Surprisingly, yes. Don’t get your hopes high, though, as the chances are rather slim. First, let’s analyze why developers decide to use Denuvo at all. The answer might come as a shock to some, it’s not to prevent games from being pirated, but to make it very difficult for as long as possible, especially near a title’s premiere. The biggest sales usually happen in the first weeks after a production is released and not having it accessible to everyone for free is more than enough for the hype to do its thing and incentivize people to buy it. After that period, the sales obviously happen, too, but usually they are significantly less in volume than near the initial debut and are spread in time. Moreover, they are also often connected with discounts.

Now comes Denuvo, which has proven successful many times in doing exactly that. It takes pirates longer to crack a game, so the initial sales are unharmed. However, after some time, eventually almost all titles are breached, which completely defeats the purpose of this anti-tamper software. Moreover, according to many players, lack of Denuvo makes a production way more enjoyable for illegitimate owners. Sometimes that’s enough for creators to completely remove the software from their game. We have seen it in cases of titles like Ghostwire: Tokyo, Resident Evil Village, and Nier Replicant, to name a few.

Why is it so universally hated? There is an ongoing discussion that Denuvo noticeably deteriorates games’ performance. There have been many tests conducted that appear to confirm that, yet the developers of this software deny it.

Summing up, will Black Myth: Wukong ever have Denuvo removed? Maybe, yet the devs have more pressing matters to address now, as the game requires some additional performance polish. To add to this production’s big problems, there also seems to be one with Family Sharing functionality on Steam. It is, and probably will be, the only option to share experience with other people, as this title does not feature coop or multiplayer.
