Ultra-realistic first-person shooter remains hidden as Unrecord devs fear copycats

It will not be soon that we will see new footage from the photorealistic shooter Unrecord. This is because the developers are afraid of imitators.

Two years ago, the announcement of the tactical shooter Unrecord caused a huge stir, mainly due to its photorealistic graphic design. For the past several months, there hasn't been much news about the project. It turns out that the devs had a good reason for this.

The French studio DRAMA, which is behind the single-player project, refrains from revealing too many elements because they worry that other teams might copy their ideas.

  1. These are not unfounded fears. After the loud announcement of Unrecord in 2023, the market was swarming with copycats. In practice, a whole new category has been created, known as bodycam games. These are titles that aim for a high level of visual realism by applying a style that mimics the image recorded by a camera worn on the character's body.
  2. Steam is full of games of this type. The most popular among them is the online FPS Bodycam (currently, the game is performing quite average after the first boom at launch - yesterday's peak activity was 551 people playing simultaneously), but there are plenty of other games of this type available. It's enough to mention Undead Hunter, Amber Alert, Baisu, Demonsomnia, or Cryptid.
  3. The developers of Unrecord claim that besides what they have shown so far, they have developed many interesting, innovative solutions and will only reveal them when there is little time left until the release. Their goal is to avoid a situation where these ideas would be copied before the production could even launch.

Just because the devs avoid showing the game doesn't mean that they didn't reveal any new info. Recently, on the official Discord of the project, they answered a few questions from fans. Thanks to this, we found out that they don't plan to create a VR port. Players might have the opportunity to play in virtual reality using the UEVR project, but this will require extremely powerful rigs. Furthermore, in response to the question about the console release, it was stated that the game was tested for various controllers and a potential release on PS5 or XSX/S hasn't been ruled out.

Unfortunately, the devs also stated that they are still unable to provide the planned release date for Unrecord. However, the work is expected to proceed at a good pace. A few months ago, investors supported the project with 2.5 million dollars. That's a large amount, considering that DRAMA studio is just a small team of a few people.
