Gwent may return in The Witcher 4, and with an old friend. At least that's how some fans interpret the developers' recent words.

After The Game Awards 2024, the employees of CD Projekt RED are more eager to talk about the new game set in the fantasy universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski. Among them were game director Sebastian Kalemba and executive producer Malgorzata Mitrega, who gave an interview to the Easy Allies channel (via YouTube).

In response to a request for comment on the possibility of the popular mini-game returning, the devs stated that they are aware of the fans' voices and comments, who "won't be disappointed." This is, we quote, "part of the experience," and the CDPR team "loves Gwent."

Some Internet users immediately interpreted this as confirmation that the beloved card game will definitely appear in the fourth installment. In fact, some people combined it with another piece of information: that Geralt will appear in Toussaint in his own residence. As Kalemba put it in a conversation with the hosts of the Skill Up podcast, the witcher "probably eats meals with Henrietta, occasionally killing monsters."

The director added that Geralt will invite Ciri to his estate, which will serve as a kind of bridge between the fourth part and The Wild Hunt. Based on this, some fans speculate that Geralt will either teach Ciri Gwent or... will be the final "boss" in the card minigame. There is also the possibility that Ciri's adoptive father will serve as both her mentor in Gwent and her ultimate challenge in this card game.

Nevertheless, it should be noted that the devs didn't directly confirm the presence of Gwent. Perhaps it's just the effect of obligations to the studio, preventing developers from speaking directly. It may also be due to the fact that the game is in the early stages of development and the studio is simply not sure in what form Gwent will return in The Witcher 4.
