UPDATE #1

The ratio of positive to negative ratings on Steam dropped to 21%. Nevertheless, the first signals are starting to appear on the platform's forum suggesting that the situation with servers seems to be stabilizing. This may also be partly the result of a decline in the number of players and massive returns.

Original news (March 14)

This morning on Steam, the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection was released, which is a set of two classic shooters mainly focused on multiplayer mode. The premiere can be described as a disaster for now.

  1. On Steam, only 26% of player reviews are positive, which the site categorizes as "mostly negative." The Steam forum is flooded with complaints.
  2. The reason for such negative reactions are huge technical problems. They primarily result from the small number of servers -- the devs only set up three of them.

Right after the release, the peak activity reached 9,232 players simultaneously, so preparing only three servers seems almost like a grim joke from the developers -- as a result, they are unable to accommodate all the interested players in any way. Most players currently cannot play the newly purchased game.

Private servers could save the situation. The game has this option available, but it's not functioning at the moment because of a technical error. In other words, the studio Aspyr, in charge of the title, botched almost everything possible, making it perhaps the worst premiere of the year so far. As if that wasn't enough, the devs are silent for now, so it's unknown when we can expect the situation to improve.

Some reviews from Steam

Below we present a few comments from disappointed players:

You launched this game with only 3 servers on PC knowing full well people only bought it for that sole reason? Peak comedy gold. Easy refund. What a dissapointment.

As of right now the multiplayer (otherwise known as the only reason to buy this product if you already own the original games) is entirely unplayable, making this game a waste of money until that issue is fixed.

Probably one of the worst launches of all time, none of us can get in a game and there are only 3 servers lol...

As of now the game is dead on arrival. Multiplayer completely broken, might as well play the original.

The collection's quality is particularly disappointing when compared to the excellent Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster released two weeks ago, which has 88% positive reviews on Steam. Nightdive studio has completely overhauled the graphics and enhanced numerous gameplay elements for this game. However, the Aspyr studio didn't introduce any major improvements to the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, and didn't even provide a functioning multiplayer.

Many Star Wars fans are currently counting on refreshed versions of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Hopefully, Nightdive will be the one to develop them, not Aspyr, if they are developed.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection was released on PC and Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5. So far, there have been no reviews on the quality of the console versions, but we doubt they would be better than the PC release.
