Legendary Dev Works on Stylish RPG; Ron Gilbert Takes Inspiration From Zelda, Diablo, and Thimbleweed Park
The father of the Monkey Island series is working on an action RPG inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Diablo series.
Recently, not much has been written about Ron Gilbert, the father of the Monkey Island series. His previous big project was released in 2022. After its release, the dev of Return to Monkey Island vanished from the front pages of gaming websites. The developer didn't retire after all and is quietly, but not secretly, working on a new game.
- His latest title doesn't have an official title yet.
- However, we know that the game belongs to the RPG genre.
- The title is described as a combination of the mechanics and style of early versions of The Legend of Zelda (especially inspired by the 16-bit A Link to the Past) with elements of Diablo and Thimbleweed Park.
The dev plans the premiere for the end of 2024, but it's possible that it will be delayed until 2025. Work on the game is expected to speed up significantly now that Gilbert has hired Elissa Black as the adventure designer, who has previously worked on games like Swords of Freeport, TownCraft, Metrocide, and Objects in Space.
It's worth mentioning that although Ron Gilbert is known mainly for adventure games, he actually has a lot of experience in developing RPG games. He designed, among others, DeathSpank and DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue. Furthermore, in the late 90s, he was working at the Cavedog studio on Good & Evil, which was scrapped when the company declared bankruptcy.
