Stronghold: Definitive Edition Enjoys Great Popularity and High Ratings on Steam
Devs at Firefly have reasons to be pleased. Stronghold: Definitive Edition is getting great reviews on Steam, despite serious multiplayer issues.
Yesterday marked the release of Stronghold: Definitive Edition, a refreshed version of an iconic 2001 strategy game. Judging by the first reactions, the launch can be considered a success, although it was not without some problems.
- On Steam, 86% of reviews are positive, which is categorized as "very positive" reception.
- Below we quote some reviews from Steam:
"It looks and works great, while offering many more modern improvements, such as keyboard shortcuts."
"Memories are back, bugs remain 10/10 <3"
"Beautiful remaster - 8.5/10 With skirmish mode it would have been a masterpiece, but the developers didn't include it. For the price, it's worth buying and I hope they add a skirmish mode in the future."
The game also achieves good activity scores. The release day record was 7296 concurrent players on Steam.. The only game from FireFly that can boast a higher score is Stronghold Kingdoms, but it's a F2P title.
Problems with multiplayer
Unfortunately, the devs did not avoid all bugs. There have been reports of problems with the multiplayer mode. Players report of high lag and frequent disconnects. The game also doesn't display ping value, doesn't offer a system of statistics for online gameplay, and on 8-player maps it's not possible to limit players to four or fill in missing players with bots.
It remains to be hoped that the developers will quickly make the needed improvements and multiplayer will regain its luster, because now some veterans even claim that the multiplayer mode is inferior to what the original offered in 2001.
Stronghold: Definitive Edition was released exclusively on PC.
Development roadmap
We would like to remind you that the developers have ambitious plans to develop the game:
- the winter update will introduce seven additional missions as part of a new story campaign with narration by Jay Simon, an actor known from the earlier installments of the series. We will also receive several additional maps;
- the spring campaign will add ten new historical castles, including Polish fortresses (such as Malbork), and additional maps;
- two paid DLCs are also planned - Swine's Bay and Valley of the Wolf. Each will offer a seven-mission long new story campaign and a significantly higher difficulty level than the basic version of the game.
