Some modders claim that BG3 will beat Skyrim with player creativity. However, even fans of RPG from Larian have their doubts about that

Baldur's Gate 3 is gaining popularity among modders, and the number of available mods is growing at an impressive rate. Some creators believe that in time it may even surpass Skyrim, but not everyone shares their enthusiasm.

Baldur's Gate 3 keeps inspiring players, and the number of mods available for the game on Nexus Mods is nearing 12,000. The modding community, on the other hand, is developing at a very fast pace - also thanks to sophisticated and convenient tools for creating new content.

Given the rapid changes and the ever-increasing popularity of RPGs, some have suggested that BG3 might eventually overtake Skyrim, the king of mods, in terms of the number of available modifications.

Game for the mod throne begins

However, many fans don't share this opinion. The authors of the statement are the moderators from the team working on one of the biggest currently developing mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 - Path to Menzoberranzan. The project started a few months back, and the fan-created expansion is now in the scenario development phase. The project is still far from publication.

According to Lotrich, the project's initiator, Baldur’s Gate 3 has incredible potential for modding, which is primarily due to its user-friendly tools. And how does this compare to the capabilities of Skyrim in this regard?

That's unreasonable. Skyrim is super popular for mods not just because how they are made but because how easy they are to integrate. You can make quest about literally anything, or put a new random companion anywhere, and then go on different quests in different part of the map, maybe never even triggering dragons. In BG3 you either making a whole new campaign which is a lot of work, or it has to be related to existing 3-arc story.

As nice as BG3 is... It isn't going to beat the freedom you have with Skyrim.

Skyrim a 13 year old game is still the most actively modded game of all time and it's far far gone from its modding peak.

BG3 had 60 mods created this week.

Skyrim had 463.

On the other hand, the content created by fans doesn't have to be limited to big plot mods - not every fan has such ambitions. Most of the modifications currently available for Baldur’s Gate 3 include new character outfits, interface improvements, cutscene framing adjustments, and even unique, custom subclasses and races for personalization.

Baldur's Gate 3 also stands behind the entire legacy of the DnD universe, whose fans are eager to transfer their favorite solutions and ideas to the game as soon as the modding scene develops enough. Is it enough, though, for BG3 to surpass Skyrim in terms of mods? It's impossible to predict that at the moment.
