Rumor: Microsoft Interested in Buying TikTok
According to unofficial information, following recent comments by US President Donald Trump about the possible ban on TikTok in the United States, Microsoft is in talks with the Chinese company ByteDance to take over the American branch of the company.
- According to The New York Times and Bloomberg, Microsoft is interested in taking over the American branch of TikTok;
- The change of ownership from Chinese to local would prevent the app from being banned in the USA.
The New York Times and Bloomberg report, citing an anonymous source, that Microsoft is in talks with the Chinese company ByteDance to acquire TikTok in the United States. This would prevent the app from being banned in the country.
We remind that Trump's administration is openly considering banning Tiktok because there is a possibility that Chinese authorities are using it as a tool to spy on American citizens. Acquisition of the software by a domestic corporation would probably reassure local authorities, and Microsoft would gain a popular platform for young people, thus filling the gap created by the closure of Mixer.
TikTok representatives, when asked to comment on the case, made the following statement:
"While we do not comment on rumors or speculation, we are confident in the long-term success of TikTok."
TikTok is a popular application for young people to share short video content, created by the Chinese company ByteDance. Its estimated value, according to Reuters agency, exceeds 50 billion dollars.
