REDRIVER 2 is Here; GTA's Competitor is Back After 20 Years
After 20 years, the competitor of the GTA series returns. Driver 2: Back on the Streets has lived to see a fan-made PC port in the form of REDRIVER 2. It streamlines many aspects of the gameplay and enables us to play on modern hardware.
- The REDRIVER 2 project was launched in March 2019. The goal was to decompile Driver 2 and port it to PC.
- A few days ago the first playable version was released.
Driver 2: Back on the Streets was released on PC 20 years after its release on PlayStation. However, it's no official remaster, but the work of community focused around two developers, Soapy and Fireboyd78. REDRIVER 2 is a complete port designed to enable hassle-free gameplay on modern computers.
How did the creators achieve this? The source code of PlayStation's Driver 2 was decompiled and the game was rewritten, eliminating errors, restoring cut content and improving graphics.
The released version is not finished yet, but it's playable. However, you will need the original version of Driver 2, because the project does not use any copyrighted assets. If you have a CD with the game, just copy the DRIVER2 folder from it and paste it into the REDRIVER 2 folder.
Younger gamers may not remember Driver 2: Back on the Streets, which offered an open, three-dimensional world long before GTA III. While the first installment was remembered for its extremely difficult mission in the underground parking lot, the sequel delighted with a large world divided into four locations (Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas and Rio), advanced driving physics, at least by standards of the era, and the possibility of walking around the game world (in the first Driver we were only driving).
