PS5 players were surprised to see a popular Steam hit pop up on the PlayStation Store - except it had no business being there

A sloppy REPO clone is the last thing that should be on the PlayStation Store. Guess their quality control still needs some work.

A lot of games get copied by other developers, it’s nothing new. Ripoffs are popping up everywhere, trying to cash in on popular titles. Most of the time, people can spot them right away, like that Animal Crossing knockoff that nobody took seriously. But this R.E.P.O. clone was so convincing that it nearly fooled someone.

A shady R.E.P.O. knockoff trended on PlayStation

R.E.P.O. turned out to be a surprise hit on Steam in March, so it's no shock others saw an opportunity for a profit. Since the game is only in Early Access on Steam, console players were pretty disappointed that they couldn't get their hands on this wild new co-op horror game. And apparently, someone noticed that.

Reddit user SamuelN0108 shared a surprising discovery on the PlayStation Store. R.E.P.O. Horror was the #1 trending game, and it even had almost the same key art as the real R.E.P.O. Naturally, people got suspicious pretty quickly since there were no gameplay videos or screenshots, and it was made by a completely different developer. Some players were even ready to buy it before realizing something was off, but luckily, it was just announced and not released yet.

The game has already been taken down from the PlayStation Store, but it’s still pretty concerning that it got added in the first place. That’s mostly because the store is partially moderated by AI, and the automated checks didn’t catch it. So yeah, quality control isn’t great, and stuff like this only really gets noticed when players call it out.

This isn’t the first time, and sadly, it won’t be the last

Clones like this are becoming a real problem, especially for indie games. Most devs just don’t have the time or money to fight them. Another surprise hit on Steam, Chained Together, has already been swarmed with cheap knockoffs like Chained to Eachother, and even a console copycat called Chained Climb Together. But in this case, the game actually got released, and the PlayStation Store still hasn’t taken it down.

Been with gamepressure.com since 2019, mostly writing game guides but you can also find me geeking out about LEGO (huge collection, btw). Love RPGs and classic RTSs, also adore quirky indie games. Even with a ton of games, sometimes I just gotta fire up Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, KOTOR, or Baldur's Gate 2 (Shadows of Amn, the OG, not that Throne of Bhaal stuff). When I'm not gaming, I'm probably painting miniatures or admiring my collection of retro consoles.
