Three days ago, an action RPG, Rise of the Ronin, was finally released on PC. One of the latest Koei Tecmo titles has not been well received on computers. Indeed, players complained about its poor technical condition. As if that wasn't enough, it seems that modders struggle to create anything interesting.

Rise of the Ronin with mod support? It’s complicated

In Rise of the Ronin developers from Koei Tecmo used Katana Engine. It’s their original technology with all pros and cons that accompany it. For PC players, one of the biggest problems is very limited modding compatibility. Some of fans are complaining about this fact on Steam.

Katana Engine can’t handle complex fan content. Right now, most of the Rise of the Ronin mods are simply a change in game colors or the ability to turn off the HUD. Additionally, these modifications are based on third-party software ReShade. So, it adds some steps to the process of their installation.

Probably in the future, we will see more mods for Rise of the Ronin. However, based on the example of older games using this engine, like Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, it can be concluded that they will continue to focus mainly on the visual aspect of the title. So, you must be aware that most likely we will not get anything that will overhaul gameplay.

Of course, there are titles (a great example is FromSoftware games) where engines are also not so easy to mod, but the patience of fans made it possible to overcome this obstacle. If the community focused around Rise of the Ronin is sufficiently determined it would also succeed. However, it does not seem possible right now due to small number of players.
