PS5 - People Don't Understand the Role of SSD
Digital Foundry's John Linneman stressed in a Twitter post that a faster drive in the PlayStation 5 does not mean that the whole console will be more efficient - in terms of GPU and CPU, Sony's hardware is inferior to the competitive Xbox Series X.
IN A NUTSHELL:
- The PS5 will have a very fast SSD, even better than current PC solutions;
- However, Digital Foundry's John Linneman stresses that a fast drive does not mean a boost in GPU/CPU performance.
Last week, Sony finally presented the spec sheet of PlayStation 5. One of the biggest advantages of the device will be an extremely fast SSD with a read and write speed that we won't find even in to-tier PC components yet. However, it seems that some users are not receiving the news about this technology properly. John Linneman from Digital Foundry emphasizes that a faster drive does not mean that the whole console will be more efficient.
This was in response to a previous tweet, in which the expert was delighted with PlayStation 5's SSD.
Of course, data write and read speeds are not the same as graphics or CPU performance - they are completely separate issues. It is worth noting, however, that the PS5 was designed with that specific drive in mind, and the console will use it slightly differently from a typical PC. According to Sony, the technology is to enable the creation of games that have so far been beyond the reach of developers.
