After nearly four years of players using a mod that upgrades FromSoftware's Bloodborne to 60fps, Sony Interactive Entertainment has issued a takedown notice.

PlayStation has sent a takedown notice to modder Lance McDonald, known for creating the mod that allowed Bloodborne to run at 60fps. The mod has been available since early 2021, but for some reason, PlayStation has only decided to act now. McDonald has announced that he will comply with the notice and has taken down any links to the mod.

Modder of Bloodborne 60fps mod will comply with PlayStation’s takedown notice

Bloodborne developer FromSoftware has become one of the most reputable names in modern action games. Elden Ring was a huge success in 2022, even going on to win Game of the Year at that year’s Game Awards over God of War Ragnarok. Bloodborne is one of many highly regarded games from the developer, but of particular note as it was one of two PlayStation exclusive titles, the other being Demon’s Souls.

For years fans have been hoping that the modern classic would be upgraded to modern standards with a 60fps patch, but FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki may be too busy to make any decisions about Bloodborne right now. This is where McDonald’s mod came in. It was an answer to the missing upgrade fans had wanted for a long time. But unfortunately, even that now is no longer available.

In a statement posted on social media, McDonald said; “Today I received a DMCA takedown notification on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment asking that I remove links to the patch I posted on the internet, so I’ve now done so.” The responses were filled with fans simultaneously disappointed at the takedown and confident that this means nothing for an official re-release or patch of Bloodborne in the near future.

This news also comes months after Sony was reportedly in negotiations to purchase FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa, though there has not been any further details about this since November.

FromSoftware is currently planning to release a stand-alone multiplayer game set in the world of Elden Ring, Elden Ring: Nightreign sometime this year. But the fan response to that has been somewhat mixed, and there is still plenty we don’t know about that upcoming title. It’s always possible that this takedown happened now because Sony plans to do something with Bloodborne soon, but don’t get your hopes up. Maybe we will see it on the Nintendo Switch 2 in April?
