Today, the smash hit mobile game, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, announced a release date for the next set of digital cards and details on the highly anticipated trade feature. The fifty second trailer revealed the name of the new set, Space-Time Smackdown, its release date, and a few cards that will be featured in the set. The end of the trailer also revealed the date that trading would be integrated into the game.

Pokémon TCG Pocket reveals the next set of digital trading cards, plus details on trading

Note: There are some discrepancies with release dates. According to the announcement trailer, the new packs are set to launch on January 29th, while trading launches on the 28th. But according to a press release from The Pokémon Company International, the new set will launch on January 30th, while trading will become available on the 29th.

Space-Time Smackdown, the latest expansion to Pokémon TCG Pocket, is scheduled to be released next week, on January 30th, 2025. This new set appears to draw from the Diamond and Pearl Pokémon games, featuring legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia on the cover of the two new packs. The announcement trailer also showcased a few other well-known Pokémon from the same region, including the Diamond and Pearl starter trio, Lucario, Gible (which of course evolves into Garchomp), and a new supporter card in Sinnoh’s infamous champion, Cynthia.

This new set will include over 140 new cards and introduce a new type of card called Pokémon Tools. Few details have been released about this so far, but Tools are a type of card that currently exists in the physical version of the game. During the trailer, a glimpse at a new card, Pachirisu EX, gives a hint. Pachirisu’s attack reads: “If this Pokémon has a Pokémon Tool attached, this attack does 40 more damage.” It stands to reason that, much like in the physical card game, Pokémon Tools will be cards that can be used by Pokémon directly.

Players will have to be patient for one more week before they can start opening these new packs. But thankfully, the long-awaited trading feature will be released one day before: January 29th. Last week, details were revealed about how trading would work, and fans were not too excited about the restrictions. Players are only able to trade cards up to a 1 Star rarity, meaning that many of the game’s rarest cards will remain obtainable only by opening more packs.

According to a press release from the Pokémon Company International, it appears that trading will require a new type of hourglass, which is one of the many types of in-game currencies TCG Pocket already uses. But trading will also require a second type of item, trade tokens. It’s not yet clear exactly how these new items will work. This announcement also revealed a third restriction to trading: for now, players will be unable to trade cards from the newly announced set. This could change in the future, but for now players will be stuck trading cards from the two sets that have already been released.
