Obsidian Entertainment is no longer working on Armored Warfare

Armored Warfare, known as the tank game from Obsidian Entertainment, is no longer being developed by Obsidian. The game’s publisher My.com decided to push the studio away and carry on with the project.

Obsidian Entertainment is no longer working on Armored Warfare, as we read on the game’s official website. All further development will be carried out by the title’s publisher, My.com. Despite this change all the content and features previously announced should make it into the final game.

Parting ways with Obsidian will likely have tragic consequences for Armored Warfare’s popularity in the West.

Although the official announcement has all the required courtesies – Obsidian say they are “happy to hand off Armored Warfare to the talented developers at My.com”, while the publisher is “grateful for all contributions made by everyone on the Armored Warfare development” – it is hard not to sense a sort of disagreement between the two parties. Back in December 2016 My.com took some of the work from Obsidian, which already gave an impression that something may have not been exactly right there.

Moreover, the recent entry by the moderator of Armored Warfare’s official Reddit thread sheds some more light on the matter. In it, the moderator puts most of the blame on MailRU Group, the owner of My.com. According to his information, Obsidian had an original vision for Armored Warfare, but MailRU Group simply wanted a World of Tanks clone. “It was supposed to be as close to World of Tanks as they could get with modern tanks and without getting (…) sued off by Wargaming”, he writes. He also adds that the company focused primarily on the Russian market and didn’t care much for the game’s quality, which resulted in the drop in the game’s popularity in the West. Whatever the reason is, pushing Obsidian away from the development does not promise any good for Armored Warfare.
