Largest Map in Garry's Mod History Takes 128 GB RAM to Run
A mod for Garry's Mod offers possibly the largest map in the history of gaming – at the expense of huge requirements.
Players can accomplish some insane feats in Garry's Mod, making it one of the main draws of the game. A fan with the nickname Alexandrovich provided a perfect example of this by creating something unimaginable.
The map, called 1:1 Multiverse, consists of 2,048 sections, corresponding to the size of the known universe. Therefore, the mod provides a map that is more than two thousand times larger than the known universe. The entire space is filled with visualizations of multicolored stars and galaxy clusters, and the author plans to add star systems in the next update. Of course, all of this is highly simplified, but it's still quite overwhelming.
If you're someone who constantly gripes about the small size of maps in games, then 1:1 Multiverse is the project for you, as you'll never reach the map's end here.
Probably no one will be surprised that the mod requires a lot of RAM. 12 GB is the bare minimum, and the creator suggests a minimum of 32 GB for a relatively comfortable experience and 64 GB, or preferably 128 GB for optimal performance. Interestingly, the modification itself doesn't take up much space, as it "weighs" only 522 MB.
You can download 1:1 Multiverse from the Steam Workshop. The project also needs the InfMap - Infinite Map Base mod to function, which eliminates numerous map size limitations and enables the creation of maps at any scale. Optionally, it's also worth installing InfMap Helper Tools, as it will allow you, among other things, to teleport to any place in the 1:1 Multiverse, thus facilitating exploration.
It's fascinating how the size of the 1:1 Multiverse was achieved. Maps in the Source engine have limitations, even with InfMap - Infinite Map Based. The creator tackled this in an intriguing manner by employing fluid portals to move the player from one section to another, and skillful use of shaders helps conceal the process, forming a compelling illusion.
Garry's Mod has been available exclusively on PC since 2006. Even though it's old, it's still a highly popular game - yesterday, at the peak time on Steam, 30,236 people were playing it at the same time.
