„It Was Traumatic”. Keira Knightley Had to Go to Therapy for Several Years After Pirates of the Caribbean
Keira Knightley talked about the overwhelming fame she faced after the 2003 release of Pirates of the Caribbean.
The first installment of Pirates of the Caribbean debuted in 2003, bringing the film's main trio into the spotlight. At the time, one of the movie’s stars, Keira Knightley, was just 18 years old, and it was her first exposure to this kind of fame, which the actress confessed she found overwhelming.
As a young adult, Knightley was not ready for the sudden burst of fame that came upon her thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean, where she played one of the leading roles. During an interview with Variety, the actress talked about how the experience was somewhat traumatic for her and led to her having to attend therapy for several years.
I found it pretty horrific. I’m not an extrovert, so I found that level of scrutiny and that level of fame really hard. It was an age where you are becoming, you haven’t become, and you need to make mistakes. It’s a very precarious age, particularly for women. You’re in some ways still a child. It was traumatic, but it set up the rest of my career.
So looking back, would I do anything different? No, I wouldn’t because I’m unbelievably lucky now, and my career is in a place where I really enjoy it, and I have a level of fame that’s much less intense. I can deal with it now, and that’s great. But at the time, it was not so great, and took many years of therapy to figure it out.
So, as you can see, even though that period was particularly difficult for her, the actress, years later, appreciates what it brought her and wouldn't trade that experience for another. The fame she gained from Pirates of the Caribbean certainly helped her career. The actress was able to become a major player in the industry early on, which now allows her to comfortably manage her own career.
Keira Knightley has been growing as an actress all the time since then and has appeared in numerous productions and has received considerable love and acclaim. She has also been nominated twice for Oscars.
