This RTX 3090 With LCD Screen is a Power-hungry Monster
On one of the Chinese channels on YouTube posted a video devoted to the new model of GeForce RTX 3090 GPU from GALAX. The chip is dedicated to enthusiasts and has slightly better specs and LCD screen. Unfortunately, it also requires significantly more power.
IN A NUTSHELL:
- A Chinese channel on YouTube tested the GALAX RTX 3090 HOF gaming GPU;
- The hardware is clocked higher than the base model, but the actual performance gain is small (2-3%);
- At the same time, the chip consumes much more power and definitely heats up more strongly.
One of the Chinese channels on YouTube posted pictures of the GALAX RTX 3090 HOF GPU in Extreme version (via VideoCardz). This is the so-called ultra premium model, which appeared in the news a month ago. The device was prepared with the biggest enthusiasts in mind, which is reflected both in the specs and the original design.
As for the first issue, the base GPU is clocked at 1845 MHz, but after updating the BIOS this value increased by 145 MHz. Overclocking the chipset, however, came with three downsides. Firstly, the operating temperature rose to as high as 96 degrees Celsius (before the BIOS change it was 69 °C). This is really high, although the cooling system holds its own and does not allow it to exceed this limit.
Secondly, in this mode Galax RTX 3090 HOF consumes as much as 630 W of power, which is an increase of 210 W compared to base clock at 1845 MHz. The so-called power limit increased to an exorbitant value of 1000 W (in the case of previous RTX 3090 chips this limit is about 500 W), so a Corsair AX1500 power supply was used in the tests.
And finally, thirdly and probably most importantly - OC guaranteed a performance gain of only 2-3%, which can be considered an insignificant result (especially considering the colossal change in operating temperature and power consumption).
As far as the appearance of the discussed GPU is concerned, the most striking are the white PCB and an additional gadget in the form of a detachable 4.3" color LCD screen. The latter is used to display various information (e.g. clocking or temperature). We must admit that such a solution not only looks cool, but is also quite practical.
