Fortnite Token is a Scam, Warns Tim Sweeney
A new cryptocurrency has appeared on the market, under the name Fortnite Token. The coincidence with the name of Epic Games' hit is not accidental, which did not escape the attention of the company's CEO. He engaged in a verbal tussle with cryptocurrency's creators on Twitter and announced taking legal action.
- Epic Games CEO claims Fortnite Token is a scam and announces a lawsuit against the cryptocurrency's creators;
- Cryptocurrency creators defend themselves, claiming Fortnite Token is a product of the Fortnite fan community, without a single specific owner.
Fortnite Token is a cryptocurrency that appeared on the market at the end of 2021, but until now has remained inconspicuous, despite its blatant attempt to capitalize on the success of one of the most popular online games of recent years. The situation changed dramatically when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney decided to speak out on the issue and called Fortnite Token scam.
Fortnite and Fortnite Token creators will meet in court
It all started with a tweet, in which the creators of the cryptocurrency encourage people to trade NFT tokens on their website. The CEO of Epic Games commented with the words: "It's a scam". The creators of Fortnite Token took up the gauntlet and wrote him back that "it's not a scam, it's an honest, fan-created Fortnite and community-driven cryptocurrency project with no specific owner or director deciding its future."
For a CEO and major shareholder of one of the biggest companies in the gaming industry, Tim Sweeney found plenty of time to exchange words with the Fortnite Token team - with the words "it's a scam" (in several variations) he commented on at least nine of their tweets. He also wrote that "you can't use the name Fortnite to advertise unrelated branded products without explicit permission" and that "Epic Games lawyers are already looking into this matter."
While Sweeney does not have a good opinion about Fortnite Token, he is rather optimistic about the NFT technology itself:
"When new technology comes along, some people use it for good purposes and others for bad. It would be extremely short-sighted to ban an entire branch of technology for such a reason."
In October 2021, Epic Games' CEO also said that admittedly his company does not intend to use cryptocurrencies in its games, but he would "welcome blockchain-base games to its platform with open arms, as long as they are legal, transparent and approved by the organizations that rate video games."
