Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Repeated the Commercial Success of The Witcher 3 Expansions
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is selling brilliantly. Almost one in four owners of the basic version of the game has already purchased the add-on, which is impressive considering how long after its release the expansion was released.
CD Projekt RED has reasons to be pleased. The team announced that the Phantom Liberty expansion is considered a success, achieving results comparable to the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- Michal Nowakowski, one of the presidents of CD Projekt RED, announced that Phantom Liberty was purchased by approx. 23% of owners of the basic version of Cyberpunk 2077.
- For comparison, in the case of Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, it was 22% and 24% of The Witcher 3 owners, respectively, three months after the premiere of each of them.
The success of Phantom Liberty is even more impressive because we waited a long time for the expansion. In the case of The Witcher 3, the first expansion debuted four months after the premiere of the base game, and the second - a year after its debut. However, Phantom Liberty was released almost three years after the introduction of CP2077 to the market. This generated a risk that many players might not want to return to such an old game, but in reality it turned out to be no problem at all.
MichaA? Nowakowski commented on this as follows:
"Honestly, the decision to release an expansion so long after a single-player game's premiere was somewhat counterintuitive. However, what happened is proof for us that solid content, which people are satisfied with, is always the right way."
It is worth adding that a few days ago, CD Projekt RED reported that sales of Phantom Liberty had exceeded 5 million copies.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty debuted on September 26 last year on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
