Blizzcon 2024 Canceled; Blizzard Made 'Difficult Decision,' but Future Return Is Possible
BlizzCon won't happen this year. However, Blizzard isn't abandoning its event entirely - it is expected to return in future years.
Fans of Blizzard Entertainment games are unlikely to be happy with the giant's recently announced decision. The devs of the Diablo series decided not to organize BlizzCon in 2024, a large event where hundreds of thousands of players can spend time together.
Surprisingly, the company didn't specify the reason for withdrawing from its main event. What's more, the event won't be abandoned for good - Blizzard assured that it will return in the following years.
After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024. This decision was not made lightly as BlizzCon remains a very special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it. While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years -- we read in the official Blizzard announcement.
Journalists from PC Gamer even suspected that the lack of BlizzCon this year was forced by Microsoft. Blizzard itself ruled out such a scenario in a statement sent to the aforementioned service, explaining that it is their sole decision.
Even though BlizzCon 2024 won't take place, the company still wants to publicly showcase its upcoming projects. We will receive more details in the coming months, including: World of Warcraft: The War Within or the first expansion - Vessels of Hatred - for Diablo IV.
We will likely find out more about these and other games at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024, which is expected to take place in early June, as well as at Gamescom (the event begins on August 21). Blizzard is soon to reveal its plans for the second of the mentioned events.
Let's remember that in 2023, BlizzCon returned in a stationary format (the event had not taken place for several previous years due to the pandemic).
