Blizzard Explains Why Season of Discovery Won't Bring 'Alternative Stories in World of Warcraft'
Blizzard likened Season of Discovery in WoW to „found photographs” that enable them to further enhance what we've already come to know.
With the end of November, World of Warcraft Classic was updated with Season of Discovery, which breathed a lot of freshness into the well-known title and was met with very positive feedback feedback from the community.
Players were able to learn a little more about the new content during a live chat recently organized by Blizzard (via GamesRadar). During the chat, one fan asked if the story in Season of Discovery will explore "alternative plot threads."
The question was answered by the game's senior producer Josh Greenfield, who stressed that update will not introduce any alternative stories set in the world of WoW.
"In the early stages of work on Season of Discovery we met with Chris Metzen [creative advisor for Warcraft - editor's note] to talk about the narrative for this season. During this meeting, we jointly agreed that we would not treat Season of Discovery as an alternate history of World of Warcraft," explained the developer.
According to Greenfield creating the narrative in Season of Discovery was akin to "finding old photographs" that don't change the story, but only enhance it.
"I described it to people as follows: let's say you're looking through family photos and find a photograph of your still-young parents on vacation in Italy. You realize that you didn't know they traveled in their youth. Does knowing this now change your relationship with your parents or the way you see them as people? Probably not, but it's just a fun detail you now know that you didn't realize existed before.
That's what we tried to do by touching on familiar characters or stories - create a situation where you learn about another adventure that these characters took part in, which may not have appeared in the story before," he added.
Season of Discovery divides the fun into four stages. During the first, players can reach a maximum level of 25, while each subsequent level raises that limit (to a maximum of 60), while offering new content (starting with a 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid after reaching level 25). The update also introduces a new rune system (at the first stage there will be 12 of them per class), modifying our character's actions.
