Black Myth Wukong - Out of Memory Error Explained
If you are troubled by out of memory error in Black Myth Wukong, you are not the only one, yet there is something that can be done about it. Here you will learn how to alleviate the problem and more about the core issue itself.
As expected, Black Myth: Wukong debuted on PC and PS5 (temporarily leaving Xbox behind) breaking many records. The title based on the Journey to the West left great hits like Elden Ring or Cyberpunk 2077 way behind when it comes to player activity on Steam alone (via SteamDB). Not everything went buttery smooth, though, as some people experience crashes or FPS drops. Adding insult to injury, some players are stuck with “Out of Memory” error, too, and this is something that we will tackle in this article.
Out of Memory error in Black Myth: Wukong explained
One of the biggest advantages of PC is their customizability. However, at the same time, it is also one of their biggest flaws. With almost an unimaginable number of configurations, it is nearly impossible to optimize a game for all those setups. Time and time again, when a new production drops, some kind of problems are virtually unavoidable. Black Myth: Wukong is no different when it comes to its “Out of Memory” error that some less fortunate of us see. What gives?
The shortest answer is CPU. However, it’s affecting very specific kinds of processors – Intel 13th and 14th gen. This issue has been addressed by the developers themselves in this Steam Community thread. They have given two pieces of advice, though both of those are rather technically advanced:
- Underclock the CPU,
- Skip shader compilation.
Going with the first option will most probably alleviate the problem permanently yet requires a bit of work and knowledge. Skipping shader compilation is easier operation, though the creators warn that Black Myth might still randomly crash in the game and the experience will not be as smooth without the shaders compiled.
The whole story about issues with 13th and 14th generation of Intel CPUs is unfortunately nothing new and will probably affect a wider range of games. On the other hand, Intel rivals from AMD are also troubled by crashes, however this time related to GPUs. Wukong is not the only title which suffers from this problem, also recently released update to Hunt Showdown was causing headaches for Radeon graphics card owners. Hopefully those two giants will take action to rectify the reported concerns.
