Baldur’s Gate 4 or Any Baldur’s Gate 3 DLCs From Larian Studios Won’t Be Developed
The founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, outlined the future of Baldur's Gate 3. The hit game won't get any DLC, and the company isn't considering developing a fourth installment and is abandoning the D&D brand.
After playing Baldur's Gate III, are you waiting for a larger DLC or the fourth installment of the iconic RPG? Unfortunately, we must come to terms with the fact that we probably won't ever receive such productions, at least not from Larian Studios. This was confirmed by Swen Vince, the founder and CEO of the company.
According to IGN, Vincke reportedly stated during today's panel at the Game Developers Conference that Larian has no intentions to continue developing the world of Baldur's Gate. Furthermore, the Belgians aim to completely drop the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) brand and develop something entirely new.
Interestingly, however, work on the DLC for BG 3 has started. The developers found the move natural, but ultimately realized they didn't have the heart for it and abandoned the project.
Brand at the publisher's disposal
The Baldur's Gate brand will remain in the hands of Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast company. So, there is a possibility that a sequel to the third "Baldur's Gate" will be created - if a developer is bold enough to take on its success - but not under the auspices of the infamous Belgian studio, which recently established a branch in Poland.
The next projects related to Baldur's Gate will certainly be tempting for Hasbro. The company made at least $90 million from the third installment of the series.
This is certainly a surprising announcement, and the absence of DLC for "three" is likely to evoke feelings of sadness, disappointment, or even anger among fans of this hit. However, Larian Studios takes exceptional care of their game after the premiere (August 3, 2024 on PC), by releasing numerous patches (the most recent one came out on March 18). In December 2023, an extra playable epilogue was also introduced, allowing us to reunite with our companions at the camp.
Baldur's Gate III has dominated all recent awards shows. The developers have achieved, among other things, the title of game of the year at The Game Awards 2023, and recently received a trophy at the Game Developer Choice Awards 2024, during which Vincke shared his thoughts on the recent wave of layoffs in the industry.
