Old FPS games are eternally popular among modders. This is mainly due to the fact that creating mods for them is simpler than for modern titles. Not only do they usually have better tools, but it is easier for amateur teams to achieve a level of detail that does not deviate from the base game. One of the best examples of this is the Alien Armageddon mod for Duke Nukem 3D, which has been in development for six years. We are bringing it up because it has just received a major update, which finally brought the campaign’s story to its finale.

The modification was designed as an unofficial expansion pack for the game. As expected from Duke's new adventures, the authors did not force themselves to create a particularly elaborate story setup. In the mod alien armies are once again attacking Earth and it becomes our task to repel their invasion. However, this simple idea has been exquisitely realized. The mod is huge, with large and refined maps and a mass of new weapons and enemy types. In addition, numerous additional playable characters have also been introduced, each with unique abilities, equipment, and upgrades. Interestingly, each of them you can also choose as a companion for AI to control.

The latest version of Alien Armageddon is numbered 5.63, and introduces twelve additional maps to the campaign, bringing the whole story to closure. Numerous improvements in graphics and gameplay have also been implemented. The authors have also introduced a new adaptive difficulty level.

Alien Armageddon is a real gem. The mod was developed by veterans of the Duke Nukem 3D community, who know well how to squeeze the last juices out of the game engine and deliver an exquisitely designed adventure. For those who like FPSs in an old-school style, this modification is simply a must-have.
