This new Monster Hunter Wilds mod is utterly cursed
The top post on the Monster Hunter subreddit showcases a new mod for Monster Hunter Wilds. But it's not a helpful change or improvement, it's simply haunting.

The most cursed mod for Monster Hunter Wilds has appeared on Reddit. Before we delve further, you have been warned. Monster Hunter Wilds continues to top Steam charts a few weeks after its launch, despite optimization complaints. In the last twenty-four hours, the game hit nearly four hundred thousand players on the PC platform, according to SteamDB. The latest entry in the popular franchise sold eight million copies in its first weekend, and according to Circana, has solidified itself as the best-selling game of 2025 so far.
Monster Hunter Wilds newest mod is nightmare fuel, thanks Reddit
But that’s enough accolades. Monster Hunter Wilds is great, but as with any popular PC game, it’s only a matter of time until the mods get out of control. As evidenced by a few images shared to the Monster Hunter subreddit. The mod in question apparently replaces the head and arms of one of the game’s most challenging monsters, Arkveld, with that of Nata, the young boy that accompanies the team for the main story. Some might argue that Wilds’ story has had an impact on the game’s sales, but others call it out as the game’s weak point. You can read our review of Monster Hunter Wilds to get our take on it. But no matter what your thoughts are on the story and its characters, these images are haunting.
Of course, this is not something that was meant to look right, or maybe should ever exist at all, but that doesn’t stop modders. The still images of Nata’s face are unsettling, with its neck seeming to twist at odd angles and its face stuck in moments of either pain, shock, or fury. It’s not easy to tell. One commenter replied to the post with a gif of the mod in action, prompting other commenters to respond with “OH GOD ITS WORSE WHEN IT MOVES,” appropriately in all caps.
At the time of writing, the Reddit post has well over seven thousand upvotes and over five hundred comments, shooting to the top of the Monster Hunter page. How many people will be brave enough to download this new mod is a whole other story.
Developer’s responses to mods have been an interesting talking point lately. Some developers avoid releasing their game on PC explicitly to avoid the modding community. Meanwhile, other games, maybe most notably Baldur’s Gate 3, have embraced the practice with open arms, even going so far as to promote a ridiculous Withers mod. With how popular Monster Hunter Wilds is, it’s sure to receive more mods in the future. It will be interesting to see how Capcom responds, if they ever do.
