Racing

September 5, 2016

An arcade racing game from Spanish studio EnjoyUp Games with classic top-down view. Though its focuses on Formula 1 racing car competition, its driving model is anything, but realistic, and fair play rules are rather lightly treated. We are given 10 different tracks from 10 countries, and the game is divided into racing seasons. Our vehicle’s parameters play major part in achieving victory, and they can be modified through tokens earned through racing. Due to that, we can forget about taking top positions during our first season, but as we upgrade our engine power, acceleration, brakes, tires and gearbox, we can progressively take higher places and finally compete for the top spots. Grand Prix Rock’N’Racing offers rather modest visuals and a rock’n’roll soundtrack.

A game which combines first-person online shooter mechanics with elements of sandbox games such as Minecraft. It was developed by the independent studio, Blowfish. The game features unique, pixel art visuals and a single player story campaign which can be completed either by sticking to the storyline or re-shaping it by taking different actions. However, the essence of the gameplay is contained within a few standard multiplayer modes, allowing for both cooperation and rivalry between the players, such as Deathmatch, Point Capture or Capture the Flag. Maps are created by the players themselves, who are capable of shaping the terrain and constructing different buildings. The game features an extensive map editor which allows us to create diversified arenas using many useful tools and share them with others. Interestingly, particular maps can be even modified during multiplayer sessions with other players.

Adventure

August 25, 2015

An unusual adventure game by Funkatronic Labs, combining elements of platformer and turn-based strategy productions. The plot of Nova-111 revolves around the effects of an experiment conducted by 111 ingenious scientists from an alternate world, where time flows in turns. The result of their actions is an anomaly that merged both worlds. As a pilot of the research vessel Nova, we have to find and rescue the scientists and to remove the anomaly to separate the dimensions. While playing, we explore two-dimensional levels that resemble those from traditional adventure games. However, most actions — including movement and combat — take place in turns. The production features many strategic fights and arcade challenges, but the main emphasis was put on solving puzzles, most of which require us to creatively use the protagonist’s special powers. Another key gameplay element is gathering parts that enable us to enhance our ship.
