Ridge Racer Video Game Series
A series of arcade car races inspired by the Japanese film series Megalopolis Expressway Trial. The brand was created and developed by Namco.
The first installment of the series - Ridge Racer was released in 1993 in the version for the Namco System 22 slot machine. The game gained considerable popularity, which resulted in, among other things, conversion to the PlayStation console. Namco management very quickly decided to develop the series in multiple directions. Over the course of 20 years (1993-2013), the brand Ridge Racer lived to see 18 games released for desktop consoles and PCs, 5 for handhelds, 8 games for slot machines and 4 for cell phones and smartphones.
The common element of the games in the series Ridge Racer are spectacular car races on tracks set in the centers of virtual metropolises. Typically, the player starts from the last position, and his task is to get to the front of the pack within a few laps of the race. In some installments of the series there is also an element of struggle against time (there is a time limit for completing each lap).
The driving model is strictly arcade in nature and takes into account only the basic laws of physics affecting the vehicle in motion. The key to victory in races often turns out to be maintaining high speed of the car, which can be achieved through skillfully executed slips (drift).
One of the hallmarks of the series Ridge Racer is the character of Reiko Nagase. The character, who first appeared in the intro of the game Ridge Racer, usually plays the role of a girl with a checkered start. In later games, Reiko is also sometimes associated with plot threads woven into the single-player mode campaign.
It is worth noting that licensed cars do not appear in Ridge Racer games. Instead, the developers decided to create fictional brands like Kamata, Assoluto and Danver, each of which specializes in vehicles of a specific type (e.g. Danver is muscle cars, trucks and SUVs, while Kamata is a sports compact).
