Rage Racer is a continuation of the popular cycle started in 1995 with the launch of Ridge Racer. The authors from Namco remastered the audio-visual setting and changed the style to a bit more realistic, and added a number of new features to the gameplay. A big innovation is the option to buy new cars and improvements for the money earned in competitions.
Mechanics
Rage Racer is an arcade racing game. In a dynamic struggle on several tracks, what counts most is speed and drifting. Players have cars from four manufacturers at their disposal, which can be painted in any colour and design their own team logo for them. Each of the cars is described by several statistics, including acceleration and traction, which affect their behavior during the race. Individual features can be improved as you progress and win races - to do this, you need to invest the money you earn in modification packages. Although the virtual garage contains unlicensed machines, motorization enthusiasts easily recognize the inspirations of cult models such as the renault 5 turbo, chevrolette corvette and pontiac firebird.
Compared to the previous parts of the series, this time the main module is the grand prix, in which players can compete in a series of races. The goal is to take a place on the podium in each competition, which leads to promotion to a higher class. Competitions are held in five categories. Triumph in the highest one unlocks the Extra GP mode, in which drivers can face the mirror image of previously known tracks.
Technical aspects
Rage Racer is a three-dimensional racing game in which the authors took care of a spectacular presentation of the races. Car models are prepared with attention to detail, and competition is very dynamic. An atmosphere is created by spectacular FMV inserts and techno tracks playing in the background during races.
