Broforce
Action
cancelled
An old school platform shooter developed by independent South African studio Free Lives. The game employs a parodic style to resurrect the legend of classic side-scrolling arcade shooters and the cult of movie tough guys from eighties and nineties. Playing as such icons like John Rambo, Texas Ranger, John McClane, B.A. Barracus, Robocop, or Conan, the player moves through levels filled with typical evil mooks and villains. Although the names of characters were slightly changed, the player can easily guess as whom he is playing. Every character has a unique ability or weapon in addition to the regular set of weapons. The objective of each mission is to free the hostages and escape by using a helicopter. In addition to single player mode, Broforce offers cooperation in local mode or through the Internet. The distinctive graphics, employing pixel art visuals, also relate to the golden age of arcades.

Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion
RPG
July 18, 2017
A side-scrolling jRPG with strong elements of classic beat'em up. Fallen Legion was developed by an American studio YummyYummyTummy. The game came out for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita; the two versions differ mainly in terms of story. Fallen Legion is set in a fantasy world and the player is taken to the Kingdom of Fenumia, which falls from glory due to the king's premature death. His daughter (the protagonist in the PS4 version), tries to cope with the problem and goes on a long and dangerous journey in order to bring peace and safety to her subjects. This is obviously noticed by Legatus Laendur (the protagonist in the PSV version), who's lust for power makes him try to take control of Fenumia in her absence. The core of the experience is constituted by fighting enemies in a real-time combat system. The key to success is to make a good use of the individual abilities of the controlled characters, apart from being able to skillfully combine attacks of the entire team into complex combos; however, having quick reflexes is also needed. Furthermore, the player has to make more and less important decisions many times - those influence the course of the story and what the game world looks like. All of this is complemented by eye-pleasing, hand-painted 2D visuals.

Salt and Sanctuary
RPG
March 28, 2017
A dark 2D platformer with RPG elements, developed by the team of Ska Studios, known for its original and equally brutal productions The Dishwasher and Charlie Murder. In Salt and Sanctuary we take on the form of a pirate whose ship crashes near a mysterious island inhabited by hordes of drowned and their powerful masters. By eliminating hordes of enemies and bosses the protagonist gradually discovers the secrets of the island, and thanks to the raw materials he acquires, such as gold and salt, develops his equipment and skills when visiting safe enclaves (titular sanctuaries). The hero has a considerable range of weapons and magic skills at his disposal, and the key element is the proper selection, because too much unnecessary equipment negatively affects the protagonist's mobility and special abilities. The game features an extremely gloomy atmosphere and hand-drawn artwork, typical for the studio's early productions.

Once again, the development works were carried out by Hailstorm Games. The game still offers a two-dimensional environment and pixel-art graphics. However, the creators managed to implement both 3D objects and depth of field effects. Both the plot and mechanics remain unchanged, thus the protagonist, the titular teenager, faces both monsters and demons from her past when exploring the building of a haunted school. For the most part, the player traverses the game world, managing their equipment and avoiding direct contact with the enemies. There are three heroes available in Devious Dungeon 2, each of them having their own class, skills, and equipment. We can choose to play as a barbarian, a rogue, or a mage. Barbarian uses the heaviest pieces of equipment and is more resistant to damage. Rogue is the fastest hero who can do double jumps. Mage has access to many useful spells, like levitation.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Arcade
August 28, 2012
A two-dimensional platform game with traits of an adventure game and a stealth game. The title, developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, takes place in an unknown planet inhabited by the race of Mudokons. The main protagonist of the game, Abe, is a Mudokon as well. The race is being abused by evil Glukkons, who force them to slave labor in a mine. When the protagonist discovers the new plans of the “master race” (they want to process Mudokons into tasty food), he decides to escape and save his friends from the danger. In Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee the player is jumping between platforms, sneaking up behind the backs of their opponents and solving various environmental riddles. During the game the protagonist can also give orders to other Mudokons. Since the protagonist has no health bar or energy, a single enemy hit is enough to kill him – in that case Abe respawns at the beginning of the level. The title lacks any interface – all information is presented in the level or on special tutorial screens.
