Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is set in a well-known fantasy universe. The player controls a party of adventurers who have to stop the evil Dhoulmagus and remove the curse he placed on the king and his daughter. As we progress, the protagonists gain new abilities and items and become stronger. In combat, played in a turn-based system, they use not only typical medieval weaponry but also magic. They also encounter friendly NPCs with whom they can trade and talk. Visually, Dragon Quest VIII resembles Dark Cloud 2: it has three-dimensional graphics combined with cel shading rendering which gives them cartoonish looks. The characters' were designed by a famous mangaka, Akira Toriyama, known primarily for his work on the Dragon Ball franchise.
