A mech simulator and the next installment in a series originating from 1989. MechWarrior 5: Clans has us playing as a young pilot, taking part in a conflict known as the Clan Invasion.
MechWarrior 5: Clans is a mech simulator and the next installment in a series originating from 1989. It was developed by Piranha Games, also known for MechWarrior Online and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries.
Plot
MechWarrior 5: Clans is set in the BattleTech universe, in the colonized area of the galaxy known as the Inner Sphere. In 3050, it was the site of a bloody conflict - Clan Invasion - which proved to be a turning point for the entire galaxy. The Clans attacking the Inner Sphere have attempted to liberate it from tyrants and despots.
We play as a promising pilot of the Smoke Jaguar clan, who takes the lead of a five-person squad freshly after completing their training, participating in Operation Revival. Unlike MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, this game features a linear story campaign. The player meets new characters, takes part in personal conflicts, faces moral dilemmas and takes part in events that affect the course of the war, and therefore the future of the entire Inner Sphere.
Mechanics
MechWarrior 5: Clan has us piloting a giant mech during missions, which take place on various planets in the Inner Sphere. The areas differ in appearance and terrain; we'll explore jungles, deserts, city streets, canyons and swamps.
During each mission, we'll be opposed by dangerous enemies. The game features simulation elements, and so, combat is accordingly challenging. The mechs are slow, durable and armed with a metric ton of weaponry each. As befitting a walking fortress, learning how to control them takes quite a while. We must also coordinate our actions with the rest of our squad and come to their rescue when they need help.
There's plenty of mech customization to be had, according to our whims and needs. There are many different weapons, equipment and clan upgrades to choose from. Before starting each mission, it's worth checking the planetary conditions and adapting our machine to the biome.

MechWarrior 5: Clans supports singleplayer and online co-op.
Technical aspects
MechWarrior 5: Clans runs on the Unreal Engine 5, which it makes very good use of. The mechas and the areas are all very diverse and detailed.

The tactical aspect of the game is also finicky. You can give your four squadmates orders, but only within a short radius of yourself, limiting their potential. Your choice is a map that doesn’t pause the action and is therefore useless in a fight, or a quick menu that takes up most of the screen and isn’t very quick, also making it a burden in fights. The first-person view is neat, and the ability to take control of your squadmate's mechs is novel, but these features aren't enough to shake the feeling your time would be better spent playing XCOM.

Mechwarrior 5: Clans does a lot of relatively new things for the series, and a whole lot more effort has gone into the polish and presentation of the game. The new changes aren't all for the better, and while I can respect that the game is meant to tell its own story, it comes at the expense of effectively removing all of the player's agency in influencing it. My idea of a perfect Mechwarrior game is some sort of middle ground between Mercs and Clans.
