Kingdom Hearts Video Game Series
A highly popular series of jRPG games set in a universe that combines the worlds of the series Final Fantasy and Disney animated films. The brand was created by the Square-Enix corporation.
The originator of the series is Tetsuya Nomura, known for his participation in the development of such games as Final Fantasy VII or Super Mario RPG. First Kingdom Hearts was released in 2002 as an exclusive title for the PlayStation 2 console, and its full-fledged sequel - Kingdom Hearts II - made its way into players' hands three years later. The third installment in the series, viz. Kingdom Hearts III, was then a song of the distant future, as it didn't arrive on store shelves until 2019. In April 2022, Square Enix announced the fourth installment of the series; Kingdom Hearts 4 was to launch a new story line, titled Lost Arc. In addition to the main installments, over the years the series has seen a number of revised editions, spin-offs and omnibus editions that have hit a variety of platforms - from desktop and handheld consoles to PC and mobile devices. The tangled chronology of events presented throughout all these installments has become one of the brand's hallmarks.
What sets the series apart Kingdom Hearts compared to other jRPGs, is the unique combination of the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney worlds. The plot usually focuses on the adventures of teenage Sora, who is supported in his fight against the forces of darkness by, among others, characters known from such films as Hercules, Winnie the Pooh, Pirates of the Caribbean, Tangled, Toy Story, The Big Six or Iceberg Land.
In accordance with the conventions of the genre, the key element of the game are spectacular skirmishes with opponents. On the battlefield we control the protagonist directly, while at many moments we can count on the help of AI-controlled characters.
From the very beginning of the games in the series Kingdom Hearts are distinguished by an attractive audiovisual layer. The visuals catch the eye with intense colors and an interesting combination of manga and Western cartoon styles.
According to Square-Enix estimates, sales of games in the series of Kingom Hearts count in the tens of millions of copies. The fastest-selling installment of the series, however, was Kingdom Hearts III, which needed only a few days to find 5 million buyers. The brand's popularity has also been reflected in the form of toys, collectible figurines and manga.
