Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is, according to the title, a remake of the classic 8-bit jRPG game. Compared to the original, the game primarily improves the graphics, offering a very attractive visual combination of 3D locations and 2D characters.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a revamped version of the classic Japanese RPG Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation, originally released in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) 8-bit console. The original was developed by Chunsoft, while the remake was produced by Square Enix's in-house development team.
This is not the first time this classic has been refreshed. Previously, enhanced editions were developed for the SNES, Wii U, and mobile devices. Subsequent incarnations of the game offered additional content and solutions, and all these novelties were also included in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
The game is set in a new world and before the events of the previous two installments, but at the same time during the campaign we will also travel to the land of Alefgard known from the previous games.
The plot tells the story of the child of the protagonist named Ortega, who went missing during a failed attempt to stop the demon Baramosa. The action begins when our hero (or heroine, because we can choose the gender of the character), having reached the age of 16, is summoned to an audience with the king, who orders him to complete his mission to trap the beast. Neutralizing it requires the use of three magic keys. Fortunately, we don't start from scratch, as our father found the first one before it was lost without a trace.
In terms of gameplay mechanisms, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake develops ideas from its predecessors. Once again, we get a huge open world to explore, filled densely with missions, dungeons and monsters. During the adventures up to three companions can help us.
Battles are turn-based and the game also boasts a very extensive character development mechanics. Characters can belong to one of many different classes, which determine the skills and equipment. At the same time, after reaching a high enough level we can go to the temple of the goddess Dhama, where there is an option to convert the hero into a new profession. As a result, the character's stats are halved, but he retains his skills, which makes it possible, for example, to create a mage who can also fight quite efficiently in close combat.
An unusual element of the game is the method of shaping the personality of our character. It is determined by choices made in the sleep sequence, played at the beginning of the adventure.
The game only offers a single player campaign.
The biggest change in comparison to the original is the new audiovisual setting. The game offers attractive graphics combining 2D characters with 3D backgrounds and modern visual effects. Overall look is similar to Octopath Traveler and the producer of this game, Masaaki Hayasaki, was also involved in the work on Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

Make no mistake, I had fun playing DRAGON QUEST III. I appreciate what it’s done and brought to the table. But over the course of its runtime, I found myself losing interest thanks to a bombardment of random encounters and not enough between all that. So many games have come since then (and are still coming out today!) that have been greatly influenced by this JRPG classic, bringing their own twists and turns to storytelling and battle systems. There’s a good time to be had here in the HD-2D Remake, but if you’ve never played DRAGON QUEST III before, walk in with tempered expectations and to be down a few more hours than the game really should’ve been. ?

Some excellent enhancements make this the ultimate version of Dragon Quest III, but it could still do more to make it wholly welcoming to newcomers.
Nintendo Life: 8 / 10 by Mitch Vogel
It's been a long time coming, and we're happy to report that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake largely lives up to expectations. Disappointing performance issues aside, this is a faithful adaptation of a treasured RPG classic that elevates its strongest aspects while doing its best to make up for any shortcomings. Some may be put off by its relative simplicity but, refreshingly, it neither overstays its welcome nor spreads itself thin with too many half-baked ideas. It goes without saying that fans of the original will want to snap this up, but if you're looking for a good 'entry-level' RPG or you just want to know what the long-running franchise is all about, Dragon Quest III is the game for you.
