An action slasher with tactical bits. Dynasty Warriors: Origins is based on The Tale of the Three Kingdoms and shows the history of China, but this time we participate in big battles as a nameless hero, leading our forces to victory.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a TPP slasher action game with tactical elements. The creators of the previous installments of the series, the Omega Force studio, are responsible for this game.
Plot
Dynasty Warriors: Origins is loosely based on The Tale of the Three Kingdoms, which describes the civil war fought in China at the turn of the second and the third century. The novel focuses on the conspiracies, intrigues, and battles between the powers of Shu Han, Wei, and Wu.
In previous games from the series, dozens of playable characters were made available, some of which were authentic characters associated with the struggle for the unification of China. In this installment, for the first time we embody a nameless hero who does not appear in the history pages. He is trying to find his way in the chaos of war and have a real impact on it, leading a great army.
Gameplay
The essence of the game, as in the previous parts, are great battles involving hundreds of units on both sides of the conflict. On the battlefield, the game turns into a slasher, in which, apart from swinging a melee weapon, we also need to demonstrate tactical skills. It is necessary to issue orders to our own units, as well as to allied forces, in order to gain an advantage over the opponent.
When the army fails, we fight alone against thousands of enemy units. This is a formula characteristic for the Warriors series, which is a hallmark of the brand.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is a very welcome return for the series. Omega Force has done a fine job learning from its previous collaborations to help inject a fresh feeling into the game, while retaining the strengths that have given it such success in the past.

Even with its rechristening, Dynasty Warriors: Origins brings to the war table, it's hard to shake off the feeling that this latest entry in the long-running franchise isn't doing enough differently to truly distinguish itself from its predecessors, despite the sense the series is starting afresh by calling itself Origins.

Overall, I had a great time with Dynasty Warriors: Origins. The new combat is great, the storytelling is much better than previous entries and the music is just a pure joy to listen to. I do miss the fact you cannot use just any character in combat and I hope they add a Free Mode where you can do this in the game at some point down the line. I feel bad for folks that bought these games to play multiplayer as well, since this one is single player only. That being said, I got about 30 hours out of one story path without doing the extra bits, so there is plenty to love here at the $69.99 price tag.
