The player's task is to safely get the character across a street or a river. It is not easy however, for the streets are swarming with speeding vehicles and trains, as well as other obstacles. The controls are simplistic, requiring the player to jump forward and turn left or right only.

Once again, we observe the game from a side perspective.

The gameplay of Wonder Boy Returns features traveling through various levels, jumping between platforms and fighting enemies like bees, spiders and penguins.
