Types of races and activities in Forza Horizon 4 Forza Horizon 4 Guide and Tips
Last update: 12 October 2018
This section of the Forza Horizon 4 walkthrough describes all kinds of races and game modes. Below, you can find a list of all series of races, Horizon stories, and additional activities available on the map along with a handful of additional tips.
General information
Forza Horizon 4 features four main racing series that offer one of the two types of competition: the sprint from point A to point B or completing several laps on a particular track. Each type of activity has its own progression bar with consecutive levels. Unlocking these levels allows you to participate in new challenges available on the map. In the later stage of the game, you will unlock the 1/4 mile Drag strips (that take place on several special tracks) and showcase races.
You can participate in most of them by driving any car, however, some cars handle much better on asphalt roads, while others are better for off-road tracks. In both sprints and laps, you have to pass through checkpoints. Missing a checkpoint results in a large loss of time - you either turn around to pass the checkpoint or the game teleports you in front of a missed checkpoint. When this happens, use the rewind race option (unless you turned it off in the game's options menu).
You do not have to win a race, nor reach the finish line as one of the first three participants. Completing races on farther positions extends the time necessary to unlock new levels only a bit which also means that you will need more time to unlock new races.
When playing the Horizon Life online mode, you can complete each race in the cooperative mode in which together with other players you get points for each AI-controlled opponent that you outrun (a team with the most points wins). Moreover, you can race against other players only, without AI-controlled Drivatars' cars.

Each organized race can be modified to fit your preferences by changing the limitations of particular car class or brand, season, time of a day, and the number of laps.
Horizon story
Races that can be played solo or in cooperation with other players, called "wish list" in the previous installment, are now called Horizon story. It is a series of challenges with a small doze of plot - players assume a role or become the owner of a company and earn credits.
In order to complete these challenges and earn 1 to 3 stars, you have to meet particular time, points and speed requirements. If you want to see the requirements for each star select the "any chapter" option instead of choosing the next one.
