Kudos to the reviewer for having the courage... Assessing GTA as 8/10 is like giving Witcher 3 an 8.5/10 - an occupational hazard. But wait, it's not that era. At that time, GTA was just another new brand among others, much bigger hits, just like Diablo - and not even that successful yet. Reviewers received the game with mixed feelings. The ugly, outdated graphics and clumsy execution were criticized. Developers were called "fast-food programmers", among others, in connection with the problematic, carelessly executed controls. GTA, however, defended itself with excellent gameplay and freedom, which captivated crowds of players.

Maybe there wasn't a "Zelda-like" average in the ratings, but after a year, sales exceeded a million copies. The first Grand Theft Auto achieved commercial success, which over time has been transformed into the unparalleled phenomenon that this brand is now. It's hard to believe that everything started with the idea of a policeman simulator, which due to boring gameplay was turned into a gangster, inspired by the classic Pac-Man. Observed from above, the player's character evading the police through the streets of the city looked just like the famous "dot-eater" avoiding ghosts in the maze. Probably no one at that time assumed what such a version of Pac-Man would evolve into.
