The second place went to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. I remember it with no less fondness than, for example, The Battle of Middle-earth, thou it's not a better game in my book. Perhaps because at the time of its release, The Return of the King was simply dazzling visually. Fragments of the film smoothly turned into cutscenes on game engine, which, in turn, were made into actual gameplay. It was good to watch, and even better to play, because the combat system was masterful – regardless of whether we played as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas or any of the hobbits.
Still, the game was relatively difficult – at least for the 12-year-old me who tested it about a year after release. I repeated my last mission, Rifts of Doom, several dozen times before I finally managed to push the unfortunate Gollum into the fires of Mount Doom. In face of a considerable challenge, the perfect mode was fun as hell – its activation resulted in our character becoming immune to enemy attacks, and each kill was awarded with the highest possible score. It was quite powerful!
