Theoretically, it should go downhill for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – it was the only game set in Middle-earth to release withing a span of a good few years. However, in practice, the critics weren't all that crazy about it – the scores were mostly around 70% – and the sentiment was largely shared by the rest of players. However, years went by and there wasn't any new RPGs set in the world of The Lord of the Rings on the horizon. And this kind of made people look a bit more warmly at the game by Snowblind Studios.

All in all, it was deserved, because it's not a bad game. Decent gameplay can encourage further fun – mindless pressing of buttons on the pad or keyboard won't work, instead you have to learn a combination of attacks, use special skills and blocks.

There are two mods worth installing while playing The Lord of the Rings: War in the North today:

  • Care Package – with this mod, you can eliminate visual aberrations that cause strange blending of textures and visible gaps between them. The mod also sharpens the image, improves color tones, and adds nicer versions of visual effects (such as anti-aliasing).
