Doom Eternal in a nutshell

Another installment in the cult series of shooters that goes back to 1993, and has been genre-defining for first-person shooters. It is also a direct successor to Doom (2016) – using many of that game's solutions and improving them, the game should bring us even more of what we love most about it – brutal mutilation of hordes of demons.

What's new in Doom Eternal?

The developers are not going to reinvent the wheel again, offering a game in the old style, focused primarily on dynamic combat, sometimes varied by simple fragments of research or platform. The main character will get access to several new skills (such as quick dash and climbing), and the variety of the finishers ("glory kills") will be increased. An interesting new feature is the ability to become a demon and invade the campaigns of other players to make their life miserable. There will also be a new, asymmetrical multiplayer mode, called the Battlemode, in which two players, as demons, fight against one, playing as Doom Slayer.

Doom 64

Those who choose to pre-order Doom Eternal will receive a bonus game – Doom 64, originally released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 special series, which is a sequel to Doom II. This title has been available exclusively on Nintendo's 64-bit console for many years, so it's a great treat for fans of the series who never had a chance to play it.

OUR EXPECTATIONS

I have no doubt that Doom Eternal will be one of the best shooters of this generation, but will it be a great Doom? That's not entirely sure, because the new Doom seems to have swollen a bit. More types of weapons and gadgets, increased mobility, platformer elements, headquarters like in the new Wolfenstein, cut-scenes, talking NPCs, tons of text, and an incredible variety of locations and landscapes comparable to RPGs, combined with primordial demons, the shotgun, a bit of hell, and the Martian base, look quite astonishing. If someone has only had contact with the last release of the series, they should be thrilled, but as a veteran of the series, I'm mostly curious about how much Doom will be left in Doom and what the end result will be.

Dar "DM" Matusiak

I've been looking forward to this game since 2016. And I can't wait to put on my Doom Slayer armor again, grab a shotgun/rocket launcher/chainsaw, and proceed with the juvenile extermination of legions of demons. I pretty much liked everything that the developers from Id Software have revealed so far – both the thoughtful evolution of the gameplay mechanics, the pretext, but still, storyline, and the dense atmosphere that still clearly harks back to the cycle's roots. All I really want right now is for the game to be finally released.

A computer engineer, but he was always more drawn to writing than programming, and he decided to tie his future with the former. In games, he primarily looks for stories, emotions, and immersion that no other medium can provide - hence, among his favorite titles, are games focusing on narration. Believes that NieR: Automata is the best game ever made.
